Pacific Islands Institute (PII)  in partnership with Hawaii Pacific University (HPU) is Road Scholar's program provider for Hawaii.  PII is also Road Scholar's program provider for the Pacific islands of Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia.

Road Scholar is the new name for the programs developed and offered by Elderhostel, Inc., the not-for-profit world leader in lifelong learning and educational travel since 1975. Road Scholar programs bring together instructors and participants from diverse backgrounds to foster dynamic interaction, engaging discourse and warm camaraderie. In a world that seems to shrink smaller by the day because of technology, Road Scholar believes that true insight and understanding are still sparked by hands-on experience and open discussions that stimulate the senses, energize the body and challenge the mind. They are committed to continually developing new program destinations, topics and formats to reflect the shifting realities and emerging trends of our ever-changing world.

Pacific Islands Institute (PII) has been offering award-winning educational travel programs since 1989.  Prior to that, PII’s founder, Diana W. Lockwood, was coordinating Elderhostel/Road Scholar programs beginning in 1979 for Hawaii Loa College (now Hawaii Pacific University.) Program options range from traditional formats to Intergenerational trips to programs aboard a cruise ship sailing among the islands.

Hawaii Pacific University (HPU) is “an international learning community set in the rich cultural context of Hawaii. Students from around the world join us for an American education built on a liberal arts foundation. Our innovative undergraduate and graduate programs anticipate the changing needs of the community and prepare our graduates to live, work, and learn as active members of a global society.”
